A meat bird will have larger legs and sometimes grows so fat so quickly that the breast feathers wear off from dragging the ground. They are easy to distinguish from other birds once they are growing and getting feathers, but as chicks, you cannot tell. This is one reason that you should be careful from whom you purchase birds.
Be leery of the dirt-cheap chicks. They might turn out to be all roosters. When someone is selling hens that are 6 months old, you very well could be getting 18-month-old hens that are starting to molt and have already stopped laying eggs. Ask around and find out if they’ve been dependable sellers before. Social media groups are very quick to call out the locals who aren’t honest bird sellers.
